2006 Black Ministry Convocation

Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Please plan to join us July 19 – July 23 for the 2006 Black Ministry Family Convocation “Crossing Over,” on the campus of ConcordiaCollegeSelma, Alabama.

A variety of general sessions, keynote addresses, workshops and activities are scheduled throughout the five days, including an opening worship service at 7 p.m. on July 19, led by Rev. James Wiggins, Jr. of Peace Lutheran Church, Washington, DC. LutheranChurch—Missouri Synod President, Dr. Gerald Kieschnick, will address the convocation on July 20 at 9:30 a.m. The convocation will conclude with a memorial and worship service scheduled for 8 a.m. on Sunday, July 23.

Ala Carte activities will include a trip to “VisionLand” family theme park, July 22 at 9 a.m. and the Convocation ~ Alumni Banquet on July 22 at 7 p.m.(please see registration form for more information).

Our keynote speakers this year:

Cheryl Williams

Dr. Cheryl Williams received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from PurdueUniversity, Purdue, Indiana, in 1975 and 1978 respectively. She obtained her doctorate from FloridaStateUniversity, Tallahassee, Florida in 1997. Dr. Williams currently serves at Concordia University, Irvine, California as assistant to the president for International and Cultural Relations and as an assistant professor in the School of Business and School of Communication. Before working full-time in academia, her corporate experience spanned 25 years, in employee education and training, recruitment, staffing, internal communications, employee relations, diversity management, and community relations. She is also a senior organizational development and human resources professional. Dr. Williams has lived or worked in more than 30 countries on five continents. Upon making the decision to leave corporate America, Dr. Williams launched Communication Works in 1997. Communication Works is a corporate training and development consulting company.


Listed among her very diversified and distinguished list of clients is the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Dr. Williams, a third generation LCMS Lutheran, is an active member of ChristLutheranChurch, Costa Mesa, California.

John Beasley

John Beasley received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of Nebraska at Omaha on August 12, 2005. Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and a member of HopeLutheranChurch, Beasley began his acting career at age 45 after appearing in a variety of local theater productions. Since then, Mr. Beasley has been cast in many stage productions and notable TV guest appearances, including “The Apostle,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “CSI,” “The Pretender,” and the WB series “Everwood.” In 2002, he founded the John Beasley Theater in Omaha, Nebraska which focuses on works featuring or written by African-Americans.

Please use the enclosed registration form (remember to complete a separate form for each person attending). If you register before May 7, 2006, the fee for an adult registration is only $115.00 and $75.00 for youth (13 to college-age) or children (5-12). The fees increase the longer you wait to register! The registration fee will cover the following:

Remember!!! You must also make your own lodging reservations. Names and phone numbers of hotels and inns, in close proximity to ConcordiaCollege—Selma Campus, are listed on the back of the registration form. ConcordiaCollegeSelma will have rooms available for youth and youth counselors at a cost of $40.00 per night with bath and $30.00 without a bath. Shuttle services will be available for those flying into Birmingham International Airport (BHM) and Montgomery Regional Airport (MGM). The cost of shuttle service will be the responsibility of the traveler. The amount will be made available at a later date.
